Japan announces pv feed-in tariff for 2022
According to PV-Magazine, Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has announced the feed-in tariff (FIT) for solar installations with a capacity between 10 and 250 kilowatts and the FIP it hopes to allocate to solar projects over 250 kilowatts selected through the country's auction program in 2022.
METI has set a fixed FIT of 11 yen ($0.096) /kWh for pv systems with a power capacity of 10 to 50 kw and 10 yen ($0.087) /kWh for installations with a power capacity of 50 to 250kW. While projects belonging to the second group will have the opportunity to participate in the auction for the award of feed-in tariffs and will be included in the 50-1000kW group in the procurement activities, both project categories will receive fixed tariffs without having to choose in the procurement plan.
For the latter, METI set a maximum price of 10 yen ($0.087)/KWH and decided to exclude all photovoltaic systems connected to the grid by January 17, 2022. Through the auction programme, METI hopes to allocate 665MW of solar capacity in three separate auctions.
Both FIT and FEED-in premiums are valid for 20 years and also apply to agricultural pv and floating PV installations. "These Fits are not expected to encourage the expansion of solar power in Japan," said Takeshi Magami, a Japanese pv expert.
METI has allocated 675MW pv capacity in three different auctions in 2021. "The average bid price ranged from 10.31 yen/KWH to 10.82 yen/KWH, with the lowest bid at 10.23 yen/KWH," Magami stressed, noting that all these prices were significantly higher than the maximum price proposed for this year's procurement activity.
