Singapore is bidding for solar power to provide enough electricity to cover 5,500 HDB flats
Singapore is conducting, or has awarded, solar-power tenders to build about 280 megawatts (MWP) of solar capacity, covering 5,500 HDB flats.
"About half of the solar panels have already been installed, and the rest will be installed in phases over the next two to three years," said National Development Minister Lee Chee Sing in a written response to a query from Hon Yeoh Yee Choe.
Mr Lee revealed that the solar energy generated by the 280 megawatt peak solar panels could supply the equivalent of 70,300 four-room HDB flats with an estimated annual reduction of 168,000 tonnes of carbon emissions, mitigating the impact of climate change.
The Singapore government announced last year that it would increase the capacity of solar panels installed in HDB flats to a peak of 540MW by 2030.This means 648 gigawatt hours (GWh) of clean energy could be produced annually, a 145 percent increase over the 2020 target.
Mr Lee said the government would go ahead with more tenders this year to install solar panels on the rooftops of HDB flats, and would use more efficient solar panels to make the most of the roof space.
