More than 30% off! Vietnam plans to lower rooftop FIT to 5.2-5.8 cents/kWh starting in April

24-03-2021

Vietnam plans to cut feed-in tariffs for #rooftop solar panels by 30.8 per cent to 37.9 per cent, state media reported on Wednesday, in a bid to ease pressure on the national grid caused by a recent surge in installed capacity.

Vietnam has been one of the fastest growing renewable #energy markets in Asia in recent years, but the development of its transmission system has lagged, leaving some of its new solar power plants operating below their designed capacity.

The Ministry of Industry and Trade plans to reduce the feed-in tariff from 8.38 cents to 5.2-5.8 cents per kilowatt-hour, which is expected to take effect in April.

"The new measures will still bring profits to investors...And it will help relieve the strain on the grid and the transmission system."

#Rooftop #solarinstallations have boomed over the past three years, with Vietnam's total installed capacity of #rooftopsolarpanels increasing from 377.9 megawatts at the end of 2019 to 925.8 megawatts.

Vietnam needs to invest up to $128.3 billion in the power sector during 2021-2030, including nearly a fifth of investment in grid development, according to a draft of the government's overall power development plan.

Under the plan, Vietnam will increase its total installed capacity from 69 GW by the end of 2020 to 137.2 GW by the end of 2020.The share of non-hydro renewable energy will rise to 29 per cent by 2030 and 44 per cent by 2045.
