South Africa to purchase 6.8GW of renewable energy

05-03-2021

The South African government will organize the procurement of 11,813 megawatts of new power infrastructure, including 6,800 megawatts for renewable energy.

The Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy said the South African National Energy Regulatory Authority (NERSA) had agreed to its decision to increase capacity issued in February 2020.

In a separate statement, South African power company Eskom said it supported the National Energy Regulatory Authority's decision.

The purchase will open several bidding Windows, including a bidding window for renewable energy capacity 5 (BW 5).About 6,800 megawatts of wind and photovoltaic (PV) power generation, 513 megawatts of storage capacity, 3,000 megawatts of gas-fired capacity and 1,500 megawatts of coal-fired power plants will be tendered.

The U.S. Department of Energy says the project aims to develop 11,813 megawatts of electricity starting in 2022.

Following NERSA's decision, Andre de Ruyter, Eskom's chief executive, said: "Given the current supply constraints, new generating capacity is urgently needed and will make an important contribution to ending load cuts and ensuring the country's energy security."

Under the Independent Generators of Technology Aagnostic Risk Mitigation (RMIPPP) program, 2,000 megawatts of emergency power is currently being procured, in addition to additional installed capacity.

The new procurement plan is in line with South Africa's Integrated Resources Plan (IRP 2019), which sets out the country's energy agenda up to 2030.IRP 2019 leaves room for several gigawatts of renewable energy, as South Africa is rich in coal, which will remain the country's largest source of electricity.
