The Israeli government plans to allocate $1 million to promote agricultural photovoltaics
Israel's Ministry of Energy and ministry of Agriculture have teamed up to explore whether agricultural photovoltaic projects can be a viable solution for the domestic energy market, and have decided to fund 3.5 million Israeli dinars (us $1 million) for six different research projects aimed at combining agriculture and solar power. "Dual use of land -- both for agriculture and solar power -- is an important step for us," said Yuval Steinitz, the country's energy minister, adding that the commitment to agricultural pv will form part of the government's plan to add 15 GIGawatts of pv capacity by 2030.
One of the six studies is a collaboration with the European Union on the possibility of deploying special solar panels on the roofs and inside of greenhouses. Several other research projects are undertaken by institutions such as the Gilat Research Center for Arid and Semi-Arid Agriculture (GCASAR), Hebrew University and Tel Aviv University.
