Community solar in the United States is expected to surpass 7GW by 2027
Solar installed communities in the United States generated 4.9 gigawatts (GW) of electricity in the second quarter of 2022 and are expected to exceed 7GW in the next five years, according to a new study released by Wood Mackenzie and the community solar access alliance (CCSA).
U.S. homes and businesses that can't put solar on their roofs can order electricity shared by local solar facilities and get credits on their electricity bills. As the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) explains:
Community solar enables equal access to the economic and environmental benefits of solar power, regardless of the physical attributes or ownership of individual homes or businesses. In other words, if you can't install solar directly on your property, community solar can be a great option to reap the savings and other benefits that solar brings.
Now, plus Washington, D.C., there are at least 41 states with at least one community running a solar program. The Biden administration wants community solar to reach 5 million homes by 2025, saving $1 billion on energy bills.
SEIA forecast total community solar capacity in the us to increase to 4.3GW as of June 7, but wood Mackenzie added 477MW to its forecast for 2022-2026, an 11% increase compared to its previous forecast, and extended its outlook to 2027.
Much of the growth Wood Mackenzie sees comes from new community solar markets, such as New Mexico and Delaware, as well as adjustments to existing state-level projections as state-level programs expand and rules are updated. Illinois and New York saw the biggest changes in state-level projections. New York, with 1.3GW of projects expected to come online between now and 2027, is expected to continue to lead the U.S. states in community solar. (News from guangfu.bjx)
