The Czech government has approved new legislation for agricultural power generation. The measures expand the number of crop types that can be deployed for agricultural photovoltaics and define two categories of permitted agricultural photovoltaic systems. According to the law, one is a horizontal system, which must be at least 2.1 meters high to allow agricultural activities below, and in horizontal systems, the area used for agriculture must always account for more than 95% of the total project area. The second is a vertical system, in which the distance between single rows of photovoltaic modules must not be less than 6 meters.
The law also stipulates that components such as batteries and transformers must not exceed 5% of the total project area.
The Czech Solar Energy Association (Solární Asociace) said that a core element of the new law is that agricultural land designated for agricultural power generation must remain registered in the land identification system. The association said this ensures that the land continues to be eligible for agricultural subsidies and prevents it from being removed from the Agricultural Land Fund.
The law also defines agricultural photovoltaic systems as "agricultural buildings" that can be installed directly on agricultural land without changing the zoning plan.
