In the next few years, the UK PV installed capacity will enter the GW level growth stage

According to the latest market research report, the UK solar industry will add 1.7GWpdc of PV capacity in 2023, which is a 33% increase compared to 2022, with the residential and ground projects segment driving the largest annual increase. Since 2018, the UK solar market has grown for five consecutive years, even after incentive rates for traditional terrestrial projects were discontinued.

With a large number of projects already under construction from approved investors, the major new capacity of large solar farms will have a significant impact on solar's contribution to the UK's overall energy mix. The 1.7GW of new solar PV capacity expected in 2023 will bring the cumulative installed PV capacity in the UK to about 17.6GW, of which about 60% will come from large-scale solar plants. This model of development may be praised at some point in the future, even if it doesn't make perfect sense now.

Entering 2024, solar power generation is expected to reach the 3GW mark. Currently, the industry is in the mode of building large contracts for Difference (CfD) projects, while the first national Major Infrastructure Projects (NSIPs) will also begin to add capacity to the grid. These factors will create the conditions for a substantial increase in electricity generation on a quarterly and annual basis. At the same time, the number of planning applications (or grid-connected applications) is also increasing, from projects currently under construction to tentative grid-connected applications as far away as 2039, with the total number of above-ground projects already well over 100GW.
